Siciliano's Market News, July 29 Edition

This week's list of new and returning products follows a few words about the heat

Preamble by Kati Spayde

If somehow you didn't notice, it's pretty hot out this week. So hot that Steve ran off and left me, Kati, to take care of the blog. I like to imagine that he's at home, sitting directly under a ceiling fan, surrounded by box fans, sipping on a cold beer.

Even if he's not, I'd like to put a friendly reminder out there to stay hydrated. While we all enjoy a cold beverage in this weather, don't forget to indulge in a few glasses of water too.

Featured Wines of the Week

Picpoul De Pinet H.B., 2020, France, $13.99/750ml- This wine consists of 100% Picpoul (or Piquepoul) - a very popular, traditional local variety planted on sun-drenched hillsides called "costières" (coastal region) in the Mediterranean garrigue, near the Etang de Thau - a coastal lagoon situated between the port of Sète and Marseillan. The vines are 15-20 years old. The color is a superb pale yellow with bright hues. The nose is elegant, with aromas of fresh fruit and citrus fruit especially grapefruit. Well-balanced with typical focusing and zesty acidity (source)

Domaine De Pellehaut, Rose, 2020, $11.99/750ml- Pale pink in hue. The nose is one of intense fruit (red currant, raspberry, tropical fruit), complemented by floral aromas. The palate is well balanced with plenty of freshness, and richly aromatic. A wine in the spirit of Harmonie de Gascogne, to be drunk young to enjoy the instantaneous pleasure it affords (source)

Featured Spirits of the Week

Denizen Rums:

3 year aged white rum, $15.79/750ml- A blend of 80% column distilled Trinidad rum and 20% high ester pot distilled Jamaica rum. On the nose it has tropical floral and fruit notes of toasted coconut mango and pineapple. It has a medium-full body with floral notes throughout and hints of vanilla and subtle woody flavors in the finish.

Merchants Reserve 8 year, $36.89/750ml- A blend of 80% Plummer style Jamaican rum and 20% Rhum grande arome de la Martinique. Intensely aromatic and unapologetic-ally funky, this is a deep amber colored molasses rum with a refined taste profile reveling bright fruity caramel flavors balanced by earthy notes that lead to a long smooth spicy finish.

Vatted Dark Rum, $26.29/750ml- A blend of 80% dark rum from Guyana and 20% Rhum Agricole from Martinique distilled in pot, wooden vat, and french savalle stills. Incredibly floral aromas encapsulate tropical fruit and some earthier elements in the nose. It opens up sweet in the mouth, with brown sugar crusted peach and star fruit. Flavors of green plantain are strong throughout the baking spice flecked finish.

New and Returning Products

Bells Double Two Hearted, $3.29/12oz - Everything you love about our classic Two Hearted Ale... now in a double IPA. With two and a half times the amount of Centennial hops, Double Two Hearted has intense pine and citrus notes, a resinous hop aroma and rich malt character. (source)

Brew Detroit Guavical Wheat, $2.99/16oz - A stellar tropical wheat brewed with a radical amount of pink guava (source)

Dark Horse Pineapple Tree, $1.99/12oz - A tropical trip for the taste buds. The second in our tree series. We, again, pitted fresh tropical sweetness against Crooked Tree’s hoppyness and let them duke it out. A pleasant bittersweet bout. Think “Great Lakes Juice” with a bitter bite. If you liked Mango Tree, you must try this one (source)

Japas Fuji Apple Sour, $4.59/16oz - Mount Fuji, Japan’s greatest symbol that inspires from cartoons to art pieces, was turned into beer. And nothing more obvious than choosing a very common ingredient on the Brazilian table that bears the same name: the Fuji apple, which despite the coincidence, comes from the city of Fujisaki, in Japan. The beer is refreshing, tart and has a rad apple taste that will make your mount water (source)

Japas Matsurika Jasmine Pilsner, $3.99/16oz - One of the highlights of Japanese cuisine is the tea. And one of the most delicate and flavorful teas is made using the Jasmine petals, called Matsurika in Japan. We added these petals to the recipe of a Pilsen, a soft and delicate beer, bringing Jasmine notes to the aroma and palate (source)

Transient Miraculate, $5.49/16oz - Imperial / Double New England (source)

Transient Right Off Rip, $3.79/16oz - Ok, right off rip you need to start your weekend with some Right Off Rip. This jammer of an IPA sqeeked in at 6.5%, but this joint is loaded with hops. Our favorite local Cascade and Chinook from Hop Head Farms carry the weight just long enough for Citra to finish this thing up (source)

Transient Science Juice, $5.49/16oz - Listen up, Nerds! We got something for ya… We took The Juice is Loose and replaced the standard hop pellets with all sorts of new hop extracts and compounds for an experimental batch of Science Juice. We hypothesize you will enjoy it, but we are going to need to test that thoroughly (source)

Urban Artifact Fire Iron, $3.59/12oz - This Midwest Fruit Tart Ale is brewed with 1,500 lbs of pink guava, 500 lbs of banana, and 400 lbs of passion fruit per 30 bbl batch (source)
