Siciliano's Market News, July 22 Edition

This week's list of new and returning products follows a few words about hummingbirds

Preamble by Steve Siciliano

While I’m in no way, shape or form a birder I get a kick out of casually watching birds. But unlike folks who tromp through woods and fields with expensive cameras and high powered binoculars I do most of my backyard bird watching from the comfort of a deck.

At home it’s mostly the colorful cardinals and chickadees that provide the cheap outdoor entertainment. Occasionally one of the Cooper hawks that are keeping the chipmunk population in check will make an appearance. Up at the cottage we have tons of woodpeckers, a few resident loons, a pair of eagles and of course the ubiquitous honking geese and quacking ducks. Just lately we’ve been treated to numerous sightings of diminutive hummingbirds gathering nectar from the recently red blooming crocosmia.

I think hummingbirds are just flat out cool. While there’s something exhilarating about spotting an eagle with its six-foot wing span soaring high above the lake, in my book watching and listening to a three-inch bird beating its wings 80 times a second as it's flitting from bloom to bloom is just as exhilarating and just as enjoyable.
