Siciliano's Market News, July 16 Edition

This week's list of new and returning products follows a few words about whiling away time on a rainy day

Barb whiling time away wisely

Preamble by Steve Siciliano

The deck furniture was sopped from an overnight rain so we took our morning mugs of coffee out to the garage. After opening the overhead door to let in a breeze I joined Barb at the big wooden table and lit my pipe.

“What do you think the odds are that he shows up?’ she asked after I sat down.

“Beats the hell out of me,” I replied. “Maybe Fifty-fifty.”

The “he” my wife was referring to was the serviceman who was at the cottage on two separate occasions the previous week. On his first visit Rick informed us that the A/C was low on freon and gave it a charge. On the second visit he told us that the condenser must have sprung a leak.

“Can it be repaired?” I asked.

“Nope,” he replied. "If it was me I would replace that old furnace too."

So there it was—the A/C was kaput and the furnace was teetering on its last legs. We set up an appointment to have the installation done the following Friday. But this is rural Lake County where having servicemen showing up on time or showing up at all can sometimes be an issue. My Thursday night text to Rick asking whether the installation was still on for the following day went unanswered.

"Maybe you should give him a call," Barb suggested when we were on our third cup of coffee. Now I'm smart enough to take my wife's suggestions as commands so I was about to go into the cottage for the phone when a trio of trucks, one with a new furnace and A/C unit on its bed, pulled into the driveway. While Barb and I looked at each other in pleasant surprise we heard Rick's booming voice. "Let's go guys! We're burning daylight."

Rick and his crew did a wonderful job, stopping only for a brief lunch break and wrapping up the job around six that evening. It rained off and on all day. Since doing things outside was off the table I took a series of naps, read a bit, and made occasional visits to the garage to smoke my pipe. Barb used the time more wisely, setting up her fly tying vice in the garage and whipping out a couple of dozen flies. Not a bad way for either of us to while away the time on a rainy day.
